Improved comfort through the use of CFD simulation

Thermal comfort is a necessary consideration to any new building or street layout.

Nowadays, we are spending more time in buildings and it is essential to create a comfortable space in which to work and live. Detailed assessment of a building interior can be carried out using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Using CFD to assess internal spaces gives detailed insight into the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) and Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfied (PPD), both essential measures of thermal comfort.

Navier have extensive experience of assessing thermal comfort within buildings, assessing the need for Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning (HVAC) and optimising their location in order to improve the PMV and PPD.

Exterior thermal comfort is becoming increasingly important with more and more people living in high density urban areas. Navier’s consultants work with urban planners and designers to help reduce thermal discomfort in urban environments with the use of high-fidelity CFD.

With Navier’s CFD consultancy services our experienced engineers enable modifications to be made quickly, and their impact rapidly evaluated, leading to significant reduction in thermal discomfort.

Key Outputs:

  • BS EN ISO 7730 compliance and BREEAM assessments
  • Provision of thermal comfort maps
