De-Risk Chlorine Contact Tank Design
We help clients in the water and wastewater industry achieve a lower total cost of ownership by analysing & optimising their equipment upfront during the design phase, to ensure their systems and processes are reliable.
In addition to analysing the proposed design, we also support diagnostic work on existing basins that are not performing adequately.
Disinfection in contact tanks (CTs) is a critical treatment process in water & wastewater treatment systems, we use our validated CFD simulations to model the flow of water through a contact basin and generate detailed information about flows characteristics, residence time distribution and chemical degradation. This significantly de-risks the contact tank design stage and is vastly cheaper than carrying out experimental testing.
During such a CFD simulation a tracer representing the disinfectant is introduced at the inlet and the concentration of the tracer is monitored over time as it exits the outlet of the basin to calculate Residence Time Distribution (RTD) curves (example shown below) which are then used to derive Hydraulic Efficiency Indicators (HEIs).

Key Outputs:
- Optimised baffle and wall placement
- Assessment of hydraulic efficiency and short-circuiting
- Generation of RTD curves
- Prediction of Hydraulic Efficiency Indicators (HEIs)
- Morril index as mixing indicator
- Explore exit age distribution for a whole range of flow and level scenarios
